Money Diary - Week of June 3, 2019
Monday, June 3rd
7:30AM- Wake up miserable because I was out late last night. I throw on some clothes and pack my lunch and breakfast. Off to work I go.8:30AM- I brought these sous-vide egg bites that my grocery store sells and they are SO good! Add a little hot sauce and they are the perfect breakfast. I then go to the cafe to get coffee with my coworkers but the fancy machines are broken so we settle for boring Keurig coffee.
12:00PM- I meal prepped chicken cutlets and balsamic veggies on Sunday and that's my lunch today! I added some artichoke pesto and feta and it's so yummy!
3:00PM- Our San Francisco marketing manager sent me some See's Candy as a thank you last week and I have two (three) pieces to hold me over in my afternoon slump.
4:45PM- Time for softball! I head to the field with my team. It's the first game we've had in three weeks because it's finally not raining. We're having a blast and guess who hits in the winning run...ME! I'm so happy! My years of softball skills are finally back in action. I consider myself MVP of the night.
7:45PM- Finally get home and my friend Scarlett texts me that she's in the neighborhood looking at a potential new place and I invite her over. We talk about how she likes the apartment and catch up since we haven't seen each other in a while. I'm tempted to order food in but it's nearly 9PM and I don't want to wait forever to eat. When she leaves I just make myself a mezze plate of stuffed grape leaves and hummus and chat with my roommate, Tori, while she watches playoff hockey.
9:30PM- Start getting ready for bed. I'm tempted to do a face mask but I remember I booked a class pass tomorrow so I decide to wait. Do my nightly skincare routine and then get in bed and read my book. I'm currently reading Soulmates by Jessica Grose, courtesy of the New York Public Library!
Daily Spent: $0
Tuesday, June 4th
6:15AM- Wake up feeling great, it's amazing what a team sport can do for you! I lay around a bit but then get up to make breakfast. I make a burrito with spinach, eggs, cheese, chicken sausage, and Whole Food's chipotle aioli (it's amazing) all on one of those low carb tortilla things they sell at Target. I then go to eat my strawberries but they all went bad?! I hate buying organic sometimes!7:45AM- Pack my lunch and am out the door. I'm tempted to stop and get a coffee but scold myself because I swore I wouldn't this month!
9:00AM- Go to the cafe to get coffee and the fancy machines are still broken! Wtf! I settle on making an iced coffee with the Keurig pods and it's okay...I just miss the freshly ground coffee beans I'm used to. I then laze around and watch HGTV until I'm rightfully caffeinated.
12:00PM- Same lunch as yesterday, but this time I add goat cheese instead of feta and it's BOMB!
2:00PM- It's officially my one year anniversary in NY! My coworker Jaime and I go to the pop-up Godiva Cafe in Penn Station for a little treat. I get a frozen drink that tastes just like a hazelnut truffle and I'm in love. $7.57
5:30PM- Working an extra hour Mon-Thurs for summer hours so you know what that means...online shopping! I explore Gilt City and decide to buy a salt float experience for myself. My anxiety and stress have been at an all time high these past few months and my one year anniversary is just causing me to reflect on all my hardships of moving away. From reading about the benefits of floatation I'm excited to see if this will help me! $79
7:30PM- Head to my cycling class via Class Pass. The theme is N*Sync and Spice Girls and it's so much fun! I sing along the whole time and have a blast. I love this studio and now that I work summer hours I can justify these later classes that cost less points!
8:30PM- Call my best friend Christine when I'm done with class and decide to walk the 22 blocks home for a cool down. We chat about stupid boys and work stresses and by the time I get home I don't even realize I've walked so far! And I went over my step goal, yas!
9:30PM- Chat with Tori for a bit and then shower, read, and fall asleep!
Daily Spent: $86.57
Wednesday, June 5th
6:45AM- Slept in a bit this morning because I was having weird dreams. I mosey about doing my morning routine but pack the same lunch as yesterday and some raspberries and am out the door.8:30AM- I make myself some oatmeal at my desk and add the raspberries and it's delish! I always keep a couple packets of lower sugar oatmeal at my desk for those days I'd rather sleep in than cook breakfast at home.
11:00AM- I'm craving nachos (thanks, stress + PMS) so I decide to place a mobile order from Moe's Southwest Grill. It's about a 15-20 minute walk to pick up so I figure that balances out the fact that I'm eating nachos and not my healthy meal I prepped. I load them with queso, guac, salsa, and everything in between and choose a 12:30PM pick up time. $12.06
1PM- Back with the nachos and they are SO FRIKKEN GOOD! Then a vendor comes through with ice cream and I snag a Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake bar -- my favorite!
6:00PM- Summer hours will be the death of me. I have to take on a lot of things last minute because a coworker who's "working from home" (yeah, we all know what that means) is MIA and a counterpart in Chicago needs information ASAP. I'm cranky by the time I leave for my celebratory "One Year in New York" happy hour with coworkers but thankfully a glass of happy hour wine does the trick to fix that! $7
9:30PM- A little tipsy from the other two glasses of wine my coworkers graciously paid for and I'm getting the munchies. I stop at McDonalds for a drunk fix, not caring that I'll regret it in the morning, or that NYC prices for fast food are insane! $13.66
10:00PM- Call my friend Sam in Denver to chat and almost fall asleep on the phone (don't tell him that). I'm tempted to just crash on the couch but I will myself to get up and wash my hair so I can sleep longer in the morning!
Daily Spent: $32.72
Thursday, June 6th
7:15AM- I wake up with a headache (damn you, cheap wine!) and lay in bed for far too long contemplating why I have to be an adult. By the time I get to the subway it's usually the time I'm already at work, thankfully I only live 15 minutes away!8:45AM- Get to work and convince Jaime to get breakfast with me. I get a bagel with cream cheese and a large hazelnut coffee -- the perfect cure to my lazy morning. $7.84
12:30PM- I'm still feeling lazy, but thankfully there's a lunch and learn with the plumbing team and I'm able to snag a sandwich, Diet Coke, and some stuffed grape leaves!
6:15PM- Bless the end of the work day! I head out to dinner with my coworker Sam and her roommate Kerry before I have to run to an event for an organization I'm apart of. We go to this cute spot in Hell's Kitchen called The Marshal and I fall in love! I get a side of loaded mashed potatoes and a pear martini before I walk over to my other event. $25
7:30PM- Make it to the event just in time to grab a drink and be introduced to the organization as a board member! Talk to a few friends and then speed walk to make my volleyball game that's about 15 blocks away.
9:00PM- We won 1 out of 3 games which isn't that terrible considering the other team had a giant that just kept spiking the ball (this is an after-work league, not the olympics, people!). I head home, do my nightly skin routine, and pass out by 10:30PM!
Daily Spent: $32.84
Friday, June 7th
6:30AM- Wake up hungry, but I have to fast for my doctor's appointment so I drink some water and go about my routine. At least I work a half day today since it's Friday!8:30AM- Get a call from my doctor that I either need to change my appointment to 10:30AM or 3:30PM since the doctor will be on lunch for my originally scheduled time. I'm hangry and frustrated but I choose the 10:30 slot since I'm already fasting. I'm trying this doctor out for the first time because I need a primary care physician in NY, but so far they aren't impressing me! Thankfully I have a business development event later so I don't have to make up the hours.
10:00AM- Out the door to head to my appointment. I fill out the endless paperwork and then have to sit waiting to see the doctor for another 45 minutes! I am so annoyed by the time they see me that my blood pressure is high. I finish my annual checkup and then head upstairs to get some bloodwork done. At least I accomplished a lot this afternoon.
12:00PM- Head to Trader Joe's because I'm starving and there's one right around the corner. If I'm being honest, I chose this doctor specifically due to the fact of how close she was to TJs! I go blind with hunger and pick up a bunch of necessities I haven't bought in ages, including some frozen dinners for when I'm in a time pinch. When the cashier rings me up I gawk at the price, but realize these groceries will last me 2 weeks so at least it's worth it for the time being. Plus I got some hangry purchases (looking at you, truffle cheese and brookies!) so I convince myself it's for my mental health. $119.56
1:30PM- Get home and make the Mexican corn salad I bought and add some Sriracha tofu. Then I lounge and finish On My Block which is oddly my favorite show considering I have no idea what it's like growing up around gangs since I'm from the suburbs of Southern New Jersey. Nonetheless, this show makes me laugh and cry and I love it!
3:30PM- Fit in a quick nap before my event later because I'm beat! Then I get up, shower, and put on some makeup.
6:30PM- Meet up with Sam and head to this party. It's for a company's 10th Anniversary but I feel terrible because it's so disorganized. No one even has nametags! I grab an aperol spritz and try to network but the whole party is cramped onto this terrace and it is not fun. We leave after 45 minutes without any new connections, bummer!
8:30PM- Home and exhausted. I make some ravioli I bought from TJs (try the lemon ricotta - it's amazing!) and Facetime my mama. After that it's my nighttime routine and bed by 10PM! I'm so boring but at least I'm not out spending money!
Daily Spent: $119.56
GRAND TOTAL FOR WEEK: $271.69
Lessons Learned:
Welp, definitely shouldn't grocery shop hungry! However I'm super proud of my spending otherwise. There were times I just wanted to order Grubhub but resisted because I knew I could eat some food in my fridge. I also didn't make any random Amazon purchases this week which is always a win for me because it's so easy to just go crazy on that website. Overall this was a successful week!
How do you track your spending? Have you ever thought of writing a money diary? Let me know and happy saving!
